Our Island Radio on DAB radio soon!
For a Radio Station to broadcast on DAB radio, you need a broadcast licence from Ofcom, the regulator. OUR ISLAND RADIO has applied for a licence to broadcast on DAB to the older people of the Isle of Wight. If we are granted a licecne, it will allow us to broadcast to around 80% of the Islands homes and businesses
WHAT IS DAB RADIO?.
DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting. It is a digital radio service which is broadcast from a UK-wide network of transmitters, including our own Isle of Wight.
It uses digital technology which enables broadcasters to package together several radio stations; this is called multiplexing. Multiplexed radio stations are then broadcast on single frequency networks. This is an efficient way to provide lots more radio stations using fewer radio frequencies.
DOES THE ISLE OF WIGHT HAVE IT'S OWN DAB MULTIPLEX?.
YES IT DOES, the DAB multiplex on The Island is owned and run by Wight Digital Radio. Wight Digital Radio was created by a new collaborative community interest company, Wight Digital Radio CIC, and has been formed by Isle of Wight Radio and Vectis Radio. Wight Digital Radio CIC has since successfully bid for the new DAB radio multiplex licence covering the Isle of Wight. Wight Digital Radio's new DAB multiplex wil allow for a veriety of new radio stations on The Island, to take to the air waves.
WHERE DOES OUR ISLAND RADIO COME IN?.
For a Radio Station to broadcast on a DAB multiplex, you need a licence from Ofcom, the regulator. OUR ISLAND RADIO has applied for a licence to broadcast on Wight Digital Radio's multiplex. If we are successfull in geting a licence, OUR ISLAND RADIO will be running a Radio Station for the older people living in and around The Isle Of Wight. We will be playing mainly music from the 60's, 70's , 80's, 90's and up to date good music, mixed with speech and interveiws from the older people, working in and around the Isle of Wight. The reliability of the speech content wil depend on the availability of people to interveiw at the time of the broadcast . As time went on in the first year of broadcasting , we would expect the amount of speech content to improve. We would try 75% music to 25% speech content to start with and hope to encourage local organisations to come in to the Studio and talk about their activities.
